What is Quartz?

The most common elements in the earth’s crust are silicon and oxygen. When you combine one atom of silicon and two atoms of oxygen, you get the chemical formula SiO2, which is basic quartz crystal.

quartz beadsIn its pure state, quartz is colorless as seen here. However, quartz can form in a multitude of colors, depending on what other atoms are available while it forms deep in the earth’s core.

You’ll find the following variations of color in the quartz family:

Ruilated quartz is formed by the inclusion of tourmaline or strontium, and aventurine by the inclusion of spangles of plate-like minerals.
